For Immediate Release: Thursday 25
July 2002
Alan Keen MP - Commonwealth Games
Local MP Alan Keen will be presenting some of the medals at the national shooting centre during the Commonwealth Games next week.
Alan, vice chair of the All Party Sports Group in parliament, will be attending the opening ceremony in Manchester on Thursday 25th July with other members of the Culture, Media & Sport Select Committee. After watching some of the athletics events, he will then be moving to Bisley next week for the shooting events and will present some of the medals.
Alan said "I am very honoured to be invited to play a small part at such
an historic sporting occasion here in Britain. The Commonwealth Games will see
some of the world's greatest athletes compete for medals in seventeen different
sports. Over 5000 athletes will be taking part and will be watched by more than
a billion people worldwide on TV. I hope the games will raise the profile of
sport in Britian and help encourage more young people from different
backgrounds into sport.
Hopefully, older people will be
spurred on to keep fit and join clubs locally as well. I chaired the
sub-committee for the two inquiries we carried out into Manchester's
preparations for the games and have no doubt that they will be a great
success."

Shooting is the third largest sport
in the Games and comprises some 10% of Games athletes.
