MP welcomes government annoucement on minimum wage
- The Government has accepted the Low Pay Commission's recommendations for the National Minimum Wage to rise to £4.50 an hour for adults and £3.80 for the youth rate, Trade and Industry Secretary Patricia Hewitt announced today.

The increase in the main rate is around double the rate of average earnings growth and almost three times the rate of inflation. The Low Pay Commission say between 1.3 and 1.6 million people across the UK stand to benefit from these increases in October this year. Ms Hewitt also provisionally accepted a recommendation for further increases in October 2004 to £4.85 per hour for adults and £4.10 for the youth rate. These figures will be reviewed by the Low Pay Commission next year, taking into account economic circumstances. The Commission say between 1.7 and 2.5 million workers could benefit from these increases.
